In 1941, the United States Mint produced a ten cent piece that remains celebrated for its artistic grace. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this coin is commonly known as the Mercury Dime. It is preserved today in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, showcasing the original luster and crisp details of a coin that never entered public circulation. The obverse features a youthful depiction of Lady Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design element by Adolph Weinman that was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. This iconic image is accompanied by the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and the date of 1941. Because the winged cap closely resembled the headgear of the Roman messenger god, the coin quickly earned its popular nickname. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, an ancient bundle of rods bound around an ax, which is closely intertwined with an olive branch. This juxtaposition represents a readiness for defense alongside a deep desire for peace.
