The 1942 Mercury Dime struck at the Philadelphia Mint features one of the most famous and dramatic mint errors in American history: a prominent overdate. On these specific pieces, the digit 2 was stamped directly over a 1, creating a distinct doubling effect that remains visible to the naked eye even on circulated specimens. The obverse depicts a young personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design that earned the series its popular "Mercury" moniker.
