In 1942, the Denver Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains a classic example of American coinage. This silver dime, struck with a purity of 90 percent, contains 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. It represents a fascinating era of United States coin design, blending classical mythology with powerful national symbols. The front of the coin displays a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This distinctive headgear, which often led observers to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god Mercury, was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. Surrounding this central portrait are the legible inscriptions of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST", alongside the 1942 date. On the reverse, the design transitions to themes of unity and peace. A traditional fasces, representing strength and authority, is paired with an olive branch, symbolizing a desire for peace. The Denver origin is marked by the "D" mint mark, and the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "ONE DIME", and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" encircle the design. This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the clear details of Adolph Weinman's celebrated artistry.
