1942-P Silver Jefferson Nickel Type-2 MS-66 NGC (Full Steps)
During a period of global upheaval, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a significant transformation. This 1942-P Jefferson nickel represents the transition to a wartime alloy containing 35 percent silver. To easily distinguish these new silver issues from their copper-nickel predecessors, officials placed a large mint mark above the dome of Monticello on the reverse. This particular coin features the prominent letter P, signifying its origin at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the inscriptions of LIBERTY, the date 1942, and the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, Monticello, is depicted in fine detail. Surrounding the home are the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the denomination, FIVE CENTS. This specimen has been certified in an exceptional state of preservation, graded Mint State 66 (MS-66). It also carries the coveted Full Steps designation, indicating that the steps on the reverse depiction of Monticello are sharply struck and fully defined, a feature highly prized by numismatists who appreciate the finest details of mid-century American coinage.
