During a period of global upheaval, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a significant transformation. This 1942-P Type II Jefferson Nickel represents that historic shift, struck in an alloy containing 35 percent silver, 56 percent copper, and 9 percent manganese. This specific specimen has achieved a certified grade of Proof 67, highlighting its exceptional preservation and the quality of its strike. The obverse of the coin displays a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, surrounded by the inscriptions of liberty and trust. On the reverse, Jefferson's Virginia home, Monticello, is depicted in fine detail. Positioned directly above the dome of the building is the prominent letter P, marking its origin at the Philadelphia mint. This placement of the mint mark was a distinctive feature of these wartime silver issues, which had a limited proof mintage of only 27,600 pieces.
