1942-S Silver Jefferson Nickel Type-II MS-65 PCGS
During a period of global upheaval, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a significant transformation. This 1942 issue from the San Francisco Mint represents the transition to a wartime alloy containing 35 percent silver. To easily distinguish these new silver-alloy coins from their copper-nickel predecessors, officials placed a large mint mark on the reverse side, positioned prominently above the dome of Monticello. This particular specimen has been certified in Mint State 65 (MS-65) condition, preserving its original mid-century details. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Surrounding his profile are the familiar patriotic inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1942 date. The design captures a classic era of American coinage with crisp, clear lettering. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, Monticello, is depicted in fine detail. Above the building, the large letter S indicates its origin at the San Francisco Mint, accompanied by the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Below the estate, the inscriptions read FIVE CENTS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, completing a design that is both a historical artifact and a beautiful work of art.
