1942-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar MS-63 NGC
The 1942 silver half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint represents a classic era of United States coinage. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 63 (MS-63), preserving the fine details of a design first introduced in the early twentieth century. Composed of 90 percent silver, the coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. On the obverse, the figure of Liberty is depicted in mid-stride, moving gracefully toward a rising sun. She carries branches of laurel and oak, symbolizing civil and military glory, while the American flag is draped elegantly around her shoulders. The year 1942 is inscribed at the bottom, with the traditional motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" positioned in the right field. The reverse displays a powerful eagle perched upon a rugged mountain crag. The bird is depicted with its wings partially unfolded, capturing a sense of impending flight. This side also bears the distinctive "S" mint mark, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility, which produced a total of 12,708,000 of these half dollars in 1942. Both sides of the coin showcase the artistic vision of designer Adolph Weinman, whose work remains highly celebrated by numismatists.
