In 1943, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatic history. Commonly known as the Mercury Dime, this coin is struck in 90% silver, containing approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. The Philadelphia Mint struck these pieces during the height of the Second World War, capturing a moment in time when the nation's coinage carried deep symbolic meaning. The obverse of the coin features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wings. This distinctive headgear, intended by designer Adolph Weinman to represent freedom of thought, led the public to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. Surrounding this central portrait is the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" alongside the 1943 date. On the reverse, the design presents a bundle of rods bound around an ax, known as a fasces, which is entwined with an olive branch. This combination juxtaposes the ideas of strength and peace. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DIME," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" encircle the reverse imagery. Depending on the individual coin's journey through circulation, the outer rims may show various degrees of wear, telling a silent story of the hands this silver piece passed through decades ago.
