During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. This 1943 issue from the Philadelphia Mint contains 0.0562 troy ounces of silver, a departure from the traditional copper-nickel alloy of the era. The obverse features the classic portrait of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the familiar mottos of liberty and trust. On the reverse, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, Monticello, is depicted in striking detail. This particular coin has earned a certified grade of Mint State 65 (MS-65) with the highly sought-after Full Steps designation. This means the delicate horizontal lines representing the steps of the estate's portico are exceptionally well-defined and fully struck, a rare find for wartime issues which often suffered from weak details due to the altered metal alloy.
