1943-P Silver Wartime Jefferson Nickel BU

0.0562 troy oz .350 1943 Brilliant Unc

During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a dramatic transformation. This 1943 issue from the Philadelphia Mint contains 35 percent silver, representing a total metal content of 0.0562 troy ounces. These emergency wartime alloys are easily distinguished from their pre-war counterparts, offering a fascinating glimpse into the resource conservation efforts of the era. The obverse of the coin displays a classic profile of Thomas Jefferson, accompanied by the inscriptions of national ideals: "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "LIBERTY", alongside the 1943 date. The reverse features Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, with the denomination "FIVE CENTS" and the country of origin, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Above the dome of the estate, the traditional motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is clearly visible. A highly distinctive feature of this wartime issue is the large "P" mint mark positioned directly above the dome of Monticello on the reverse. This prominent placement was designed to make the silver-alloy coins easy to identify and sort. Preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this coin retains its original mint luster, allowing the fine details of Felix O. Schlag's design to be appreciated just as they appeared when the coin left the Philadelphia Mint in 1943.
