During the height of the Second World War, the San Francisco mint struck this ten-cent piece, a coin that continues to captivate observers with its intricate artistry and precious metal composition. Composed of 90% silver, each of these dimes contains 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal, representing a classic era of American circulating coinage. The obverse of the coin showcases a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This distinctive headgear, which often led the public to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god Mercury, was intended to symbolize freedom of thought. Alongside this striking portrait, the legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the wartime date of 1943 are clearly visible. On the reverse, the design transitions to themes of strength and peace. A fasces, representing collective authority and preparedness, is bound alongside an olive branch, the traditional symbol of peace. The San Francisco "S" mint mark is located on this side, alongside the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the denomination, "ONE DIME". This particular coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of Adolph Weinman's celebrated design.
