Struck during the height of the Second World War, this 10 cent piece from 1943 represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted at the San Francisco facility, as indicated by the S mint mark, the coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. It survives today in Extra Fine condition, preserving the crisp details of its celebrated mid century artwork. The obverse features a youthful depiction of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a design element that famously led the public to mistake her for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. Alongside her profile, the inscriptions IN GOD WE TRUST and the date 1943 are clearly visible. Adolph Weinman designed this iconic imagery, which remains one of the most admired portraits in United States numismatic history. On the reverse, the design presents a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, symbolizing strength and unity. This central image is closely intertwined with an olive branch, representing a desire for peace. The reverse also bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, completing a powerful visual narrative of strength balanced with harmony.
