1944 Mercury Dime Good/VF
In 1944, the United States Mint produced a ten-cent piece that remains one of the most visually striking examples of mid-century American coinage. Minted in Philadelphia, this coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. While officially a dime, its popular nickname derives from the distinctive imagery on its front face. Created by sculptor Adolph Weinman, the obverse features a youthful personification of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This headgear, representing freedom of thought, led the public to mistake the figure for the Roman messenger god, Mercury. Alongside this portrait, the legend "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date 1944 are clearly visible. The reverse of the coin presents a powerful combination of symbols: a fasces, which is a bundle of rods bound around an ax, entwined with an olive branch. These elements were chosen to represent both readiness for defense and a desire for peace. Inscriptions on this side include the national motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the issuing country. Because these coins circulated widely in daily commerce, the outer rims often display gentle signs of wear, telling a silent story of the coin's journey through wartime America.
