Struck during the penultimate year of World War II, the 1944-S Mercury Dime represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted at the San Francisco facility, this ten-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. Despite its common moniker, the coin does not actually depict the Roman messenger god, but rather a youthful personification of Liberty. Designed by Adolph Weinman, the obverse features Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. This side also bears the national motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" alongside the 1944 date. On the reverse, the design displays a fasces, an ancient symbol of authority consisting of a bundle of rods bound around an axe, paired with an olive branch to represent peace. The reverse inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the denomination "ONE DIME," with the "S" mint mark indicating its San Francisco origin.
