Struck during the final years of World War II, this 1944 silver ten-cent piece from the San Francisco Mint represents a classic era of American coinage. Often referred to as the Mercury dime, the design actually portrays a youthful personification of Liberty. She wears a winged Phrygian cap on the obverse, a symbol intended to represent freedom of thought. The front of the coin also displays the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST", alongside the date. The reverse of the coin features a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, which is closely intertwined with an olive branch. This juxtaposition represents both strength and a desire for peace. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and the denomination "ONE DIME" encircle the central design. Crafted from 90 percent silver, this particular specimen has been graded in Mint State 66 (MS-66) condition.
