1944-S Silver Wartime Jefferson Nickel BU
1944-S Silver Wartime Jefferson Nickel BU
During the height of the Second World War, the composition of the United States five-cent piece underwent a temporary transformation. To conserve nickel for the war effort, the government altered the metal alloy, producing what are now known as wartime nickels. This 1944 specimen from the San Francisco Mint contains 35 percent silver, giving it a distinct metallic luster and a unique place in mid-century American coinage. The obverse of the coin features a profile portrait of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. Surrounding his likeness are the familiar inscriptions of LIBERTY and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1944 date of production. The design presents a clean, classic representation of early American leadership. On the reverse, the coin displays Monticello, Jefferson's historic Virginia estate. Below the building, the words MONTICELLO and FIVE CENTS are clearly visible, flanked by the national name, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. A prominent S mint mark is situated above the dome of the mansion, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility. Preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this coin offers an excellent opportunity to study the specialized craftsmanship and material adaptations of the wartime era.
