1945 Canada Steel "Victory" 5 Cents BU

0.0000 troy oz 1945 Brilliant Unc

During the final year of the Second World War, Canada produced a distinctive five-cent coin that departed from traditional coinage metals. Struck under the authority of King George VI, this piece is composed of chrome-plated steel, a choice reflecting the critical wartime diversion of copper and nickel to military manufacturing. This particular specimen survives in brilliant uncirculated condition, preserving the bright surfaces of its unconventional metal composition. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of King George VI, surrounded by the Latin inscription GEORGIVS VI D G REX ET IND IMP, denoting his title as King and Emperor of India. The design links Canada directly to the broader global events of the era, serving as a tangible artifact of the British Commonwealth during a historic turning point. On the reverse, the coin displays a bold and symbolic design featuring a central torch superimposed over a large letter V. This emblem served a dual purpose, representing both the Allied hope for victory and the Roman numeral for the coin's five-cent denomination. The date 1945 is split on either side of the central design, with the word CENTS anchored below. This striking piece represents one of more than 18 million such coins struck, capturing a moment of transition and triumph in mid-century history.
