1945-S Mercury Dime BU
Semi-Numismatic
1945-S Mercury Dime BU
Struck during the final year of World War II, this ten-cent piece from the San Francisco Mint showcases one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatics. Composed of 90 percent silver with a metal content of 0.0715 troy ounces, this coin survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its mid-century artistry. The obverse presents a youthful portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap, a representation that historically led the public to mistake her for the Roman messenger god Mercury. Alongside her profile, the traditional motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is paired with the 1945 date. On the reverse, the design features a fasces, a bundle of rods bound around an ax, positioned next to an olive branch. This combination contrasts symbols of strength and peace. The reverse also displays the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", the denomination "ONE DIME", and the Latin phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM", alongside the distinct "S" mint mark indicating its origin at the San Francisco Mint.
