In 1946, the United States marked a century of Iowa statehood with a special commemorative silver half dollar. Struck in Philadelphia with a purity of 90 percent silver, this coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. The total mintage reached just over 100,000 pieces, making it a distinctive mid-century issue with a highly localized distribution history. The obverse side of the coin displays the first stone capitol building located in Iowa City, representing the early foundations of the state's government. On the reverse, the design showcases the official Iowa state seal. Legible inscriptions on the coin include the dual dates of 1846 and 1946, alongside the state name, the denomination of half dollar, and traditional mottos such as "In God We Trust" and "E Pluribus Unum." The distribution of this commemorative coin followed an unusual path. The majority of the issue was originally reserved for Iowa residents, with only a small leftover portion offered to the wider public. In a forward-thinking gesture, organizers set aside two specific batches of 500 coins to be held back for future generations, one group designated for distribution in 1996, and another reserved all the way until the year 2046.
