Issued from 1948 to 1963, the Franklin Half Dollar represents a distinctive era in United States coinage. This fifty-cent piece, struck in 0.900 fine silver, contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Depending on the year of issue, these coins were produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, or San Francisco mints. The obverse of the coin features a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, designed by John R. Sinnock. Surrounding the profile are the inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the year of mintage. This design was a departure from previous half dollars, celebrating a historical figure rather than an allegorical representation of Liberty. On the reverse, the central focus is the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible, satisfying the legal requirement to include the national bird on the half dollar. The reverse also bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and states the denomination as HALF DOLLAR.
