1948-D Franklin Half Dollar AU
In 1948, the United States Mint introduced a new half dollar design that departed from the traditional allegorical figures of Liberty, choosing instead to honor one of the nation's most famous founding fathers. This initial year of issue features a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin on the obverse. Surrounding his portrait are the classic inscriptions of freedom and faith, including the word "LIBERTY" and the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST," alongside the 1948 date. The reverse of the coin features the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible, a detail added to fulfill traditional design requirements. The reverse inscriptions clearly display the denomination of "HALF DOLLAR" and the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Struck at the Denver Mint, this piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal.
