1948-D Franklin Half Dollar Fine/XF

0.3575 troy oz .900 1948 Fine or Better

In 1948, the United States Mint introduced a new half dollar design that broke from the tradition of depicting allegorical figures of Liberty, opting instead to honor an actual historical individual. This coin features the right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin on its obverse. Above his likeness, the word LIBERTY is spaced widely, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed below his shoulder. The year 1948 is positioned to the right of his portrait, marking the inaugural year of this beloved series. The reverse of the coin presents a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the left of the bell, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible, while a small eagle with open wings stands to the right. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches over the top of the design, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is placed along the bottom rim. Struck at the Denver Mint, these coins are composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal.
