In 1948, the United States Mint introduced a new half dollar design, departing from previous allegorical figures to honor one of the nation's most famous founding citizens. This Denver minted coin features a right facing profile of Benjamin Franklin on its obverse, accompanied by the inscriptions of liberty and trust. The year of manufacture is positioned to the right of the portrait. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell. To the left of the bell, the traditional motto of unity is inscribed, while a small eagle with open wings balances the design on the right. The issuing nation is named above the central image, and the face value of fifty cents is anchored below. This particular silver piece, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, has been certified in Mint State 64 condition. It also carries the highly regarded Full Bell Lines designation, indicating that the horizontal details on the lower portion of the Liberty Bell are exceptionally sharp and complete, a feature highly prized by those who appreciate mid-century American coinage.
