The year 1948 marked a significant shift in American coinage with the introduction of the Franklin Half Dollar. This fifty cent piece broke from the tradition of depicting allegorical figures of Liberty, opting instead to honor Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's most revered founding figures. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.3575 troy ounces, this coin represents the beginning of a beloved mid twentieth century series. On the obverse, a clean profile of Benjamin Franklin faces to the right. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the date of 1948. The design was crafted by John R. Sinnock, who captured a dignified yet accessible portrait of the statesman and inventor. The reverse of the coin is dominated by a detailed rendering of the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible, a detail included to satisfy legal requirements for the denomination. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the face value of HALF DOLLAR, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. This particular specimen is in Fine or better condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining its essential design elements.
