1948 Franklin Half Dollar MS-63 NGC (FBL)

In 1948, a new face appeared on United States coinage, departing from the traditional personifications of Liberty to honor Benjamin Franklin. This mid-century silver half dollar, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, features a crisp right-facing portrait of the famous philosopher and statesman on the obverse. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the date of issue. The reverse of the coin displays the iconic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle is visible, while the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM resides to the left. The design is framed by the legend above and the half dollar denomination below. This particular specimen is notable for its exceptional strike, earning the Full Bell Lines designation, which indicates that the horizontal lines on the lower portion of the bell are fully defined and unbroken. Crafted from 0.900 fine silver, this piece contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. It has been certified in Mint State 63, preserving the original artistry of designer John R. Sinnock just as it emerged from the minting press in Philadelphia, bearing no mint mark.
