In 1949, the San Francisco Mint produced a remarkable silver coin that departed from traditional allegorical figures. The 1949-S Franklin Half Dollar features a realistic right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin on its obverse. This design choice honors one of America's most famous founding figures, accompanied by the classic inscriptions of liberty and trust, alongside the 1949 date. The reverse of the coin is rich with symbolic imagery, dominated by a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible, satisfying the traditional requirement for the denomination. The reverse also displays the issuing nation, the face value of half a dollar, and the traditional motto signifying unity. This particular issue carries the distinctive 'S' mint mark, indicating its origin from the San Francisco facility. Struck in 90% silver, each of these half dollars contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, this coin offers a clear look at the artistry of John R. Sinnock, whose work defined this mid-twentieth-century American coin series.
