In 1950, Mexico issued a distinctive silver coin to mark the completion of the Southern Railroad, a vital transport link. This five-pesos piece features a beautifully detailed reverse design depicting a steam locomotive chugging through a landscape of palm trees, with a bright sun rising in the background. The year of issue, 1950, is prominently displayed alongside the celebratory theme of the railroad. The obverse of the coin displays the traditional Mexican national coat of arms, which shows an eagle perched on a cactus while grasping a snake. Encircling this central emblem are the inscriptions detailing the coin's weight and silver purity, along with the denomination and the Mexico City mint mark. Struck in 0.720 fine silver, each coin contains 0.643 troy ounces of precious metal. While the original production run for this commemorative issue was 200,000 pieces, its modern-day scarcity is highly unusual. It is widely believed that approximately half of the entire mintage was melted down years later to provide silver for the 1968 Olympic commemorative coins. This dramatic reduction in surviving numbers makes the remaining brilliant uncirculated examples a particularly compelling find for those studying mid-twentieth-century Mexican coinage.
