In 1951, the United States Mint continued its mid-century half dollar series featuring Benjamin Franklin. This silver coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, contains 0.3575 troy ounces of actual silver content within its 90 percent pure composition. The piece represents a departure from earlier coinage by showcasing a historical American statesman rather than an allegorical figure. The obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, captured in a clean profile. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1951 date. This design was created by John R. Sinnock, who brought a classic simplicity to the coin's front face. On the reverse, the central focus is the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with outspread wings is visible, fulfilling the legal requirement for the denomination. The inscriptions on this side include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the face value of HALF DOLLAR, and the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
