In 1952, the Denver Mint produced a striking silver half dollar that departed from the traditional allegorical figures of American coinage. Instead, this mid-century issue honors Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's most influential founding figures. His right-facing profile dominates the obverse, accompanied by the classic inscriptions of liberty and trust, alongside the mid-century date. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the coin is struck in 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. The reverse presents a detailed depiction of the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings stands out, fulfilling the legal requirement for the denomination. The reverse also displays the traditional motto of national unity and the face value of fifty cents, with the small Denver mint mark positioned above the bell.
