In 1952, the Denver Mint struck this mid-century silver half dollar, continuing a popular series that broke from the traditional allegorical figures of American coinage. Rather than a depiction of Liberty herself, the obverse presents a right-facing portrait of the statesman and inventor Benjamin Franklin. This design, created by John R. Sinnock, pairs the portrait with the foundational inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the mid-century date. The reverse of the coin features a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings stands out, satisfying the legal requirement for the bird to appear on the half dollar. The inscriptions on this side include the name of the nation, the face value of HALF DOLLAR, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Struck in 90 percent silver, each of these coins contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal and represents a classic era of United States coinage.
