In 1952, the San Francisco Mint struck this silver half dollar, continuing a mid-century tradition that departed from the allegorical figures typical of earlier American coinage. Instead, the coin honors Benjamin Franklin, presenting his right-facing profile as the central focus of the obverse. Above his likeness, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned underneath. The year of minting is placed to the right of Franklin's portrait. The reverse side of the coin is dedicated to another iconic symbol, the Liberty Bell. Accompanying the bell is a small eagle with spread wings to its right, while the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears to the left. The face value, HALF DOLLAR, is clearly inscribed below the bell. Composed of 90 percent silver, this coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal and represents a classic era of United States coin design, crafted by designer John R. Sinnock.
