In 1953, the Denver Mint produced a striking silver half dollar that departed from the traditional allegorical figures of American coinage. This mid-century coin honors Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's most famous founding figures, whose right-facing portrait dominates the obverse. The design, created by John R. Sinnock, positions the word LIBERTY in a wide arch above the bust, while the solemn promise IN GOD WE TRUST rests below. The year of issue is placed clearly to the right of Franklin's profile. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the left of this national symbol, the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while a small eagle with open wings stands to the right. The denomination, HALF DOLLAR, is written along the bottom rim. Struck in 90 percent silver, this coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, representing a classic era of United States minting.
