1953 Franklin Half Dollar Fine/XF
In 1953, the United States Mint produced a half dollar that departed from traditional allegorical figures, opting instead to honor a historical American icon. The obverse of this silver coin features a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, designed by John R. Sinnock. Surrounding the statesman's likeness are the words LIBERTY arched above and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, positioned underneath. The year of issue is placed to the right of his profile. The reverse side of this fifty-cent piece is rich with symbolic imagery centered around the Liberty Bell. To the left of the cracked bell, the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while a small eagle with open wings balances the design on the right. The denomination, HALF DOLLAR, is clearly stated along the lower rim. Composed of 90 percent silver, this coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal and represents a classic era of mid-century American coinage.
