In 1953, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of proof coins, including a half dollar featuring one of America's most famous founding figures. This particular piece has been certified in an exceptional Proof 66 condition, highlighting the meticulous craftsmanship of the mid twentieth century. With a silver purity of 90 percent, the coin contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, combining historical artistry with physical substance. The front of the coin displays a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin. The word of freedom is positioned along the upper rim, while a classic national motto is inscribed below, accompanied by the 1953 date to the right of the bust. This design departed from traditional allegorical figures, opting instead to honor a real historical individual on a circulating United States coin. On the reverse, the central focus is the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the left of the bell, the traditional Latin phrase meaning out of many, one is visible, balanced on the right by a small eagle with its wings spread wide. The name of the issuing nation arches over the top of the design, while the fifty-cent face value is clearly spelled out along the bottom border.
