The 1953 Franklin half dollar proof represents a beautiful mid-century moment in United States coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia mint, these special proof coins carry no mint mark, leaving the focus entirely on the polished surfaces and the artistry of the design. Crafted from 90 percent silver, each piece contains approximately 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal. On the obverse, a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin offers a dignified departure from traditional allegorical figures. Surrounding this historic portrait are the inscriptions of LIBERTY and the timeless motto IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1953 date. The design was originally created by sculptor John R. Sinnock. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings stands out, fulfilling the legal requirement for the denomination. The reverse is completed with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the face value of HALF DOLLAR.
