Struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1953, this silver half dollar represents a classic era of United States coinage. Made with a composition of 90 percent silver, which equates to 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, the coin is a tangible piece of mid-twentieth-century design. The obverse features a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's most famous founding figures. Surrounding his likeness are the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the 1953 year of issue. This portrait was created by designer John R. Sinnock. On the reverse, the central focus is the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible. The reverse also displays the required inscriptions denoting the country, the half dollar denomination, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM.
