This mid-century half dollar, minted in 1953 at the San Francisco facility, showcases a distinct departure from traditional allegorical figures on United States coinage. The obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's most influential founding figures. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, along with the date of issue. The reverse of the coin is rich in American symbolism, dominated by the image of the Liberty Bell. To the left of the bell, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible, while a small eagle with outstretched wings sits to the right. The design is completed with the national legend inscribed above the bell and the fifty-cent denomination below it. A small S mint mark indicates its origin from the West Coast mint. Struck in 90 percent silver, this piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal.
