In 1954, the Denver Mint produced a silver half dollar that stands as a classic piece of mid-century American coinage. This fifty-cent piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of the precious metal. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the coin departed from traditional allegorical figures, opting instead to honor one of the nation's most famous founding fathers. The obverse displays a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin. Surrounding his likeness are the traditional inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1954 production year. This clean, dignified representation of Franklin captures his intellectual and historical legacy in a simple profile. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the left of the bell, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while a small eagle with open wings sits to the right. The reverse is completed by inscriptions declaring the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, arched along the top, and the HALF DOLLAR denomination running along the bottom border.
