In 1954, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited number of proof coins, showcasing the mid-century design of the Franklin Half Dollar with exceptional clarity and mirror-like surfaces. This particular specimen is certified in Proof 64 condition, highlighting the artistry of John R. Sinnock. Struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal content of 0.3575 troy ounces, the coin represents a high standard of mid-twentieth-century American minting. The obverse features a clean, right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin. Surrounding his portrait are the fundamental inscriptions of American coinage, including the word LIBERTY, the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date of production, 1954. Because this coin was minted in Philadelphia, it does not display a mint mark, leaving the fields around the portrait remarkably open and uncluttered. On the reverse, the central focus is the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings is visible, a design element added to fulfill legal coinage requirements. The reverse inscriptions clearly display the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the denomination of HALF DOLLAR, and the traditional Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM.
