1954-S Franklin Half Dollar Fine/XF

0.3575 troy oz .900 1954 Fine or Better

In 1954, the San Francisco Mint struck this mid-century silver half dollar, a coin that departed from traditional allegorical figures to honor one of America's most famous founding fathers. The obverse presents a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin. Surrounding his likeness are the classic inscriptions of freedom and faith, with the word LIBERTY positioned over his head and the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, placed underneath. The year of minting is clearly visible to the right of the portrait. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the Liberty Bell as the central reverse motif. To the left of the bell, the phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed, while a small eagle with open wings stands on the right. The denomination is spelled out along the bottom curve. Minted with a silver purity of 90 percent, this fifty-cent piece represents a classic era of United States coinage design, showcasing the work of engraver John R. Sinnock in a circulated condition of Fine or better.
