0.3617 troy oz .900 1955 MS-65 (NGC)

In 1955, the Philadelphia Mint produced a silver half dollar that would capture the imagination of coin enthusiasts for generations. This specific issue, certified in Mint State 65, is widely celebrated for a fascinating minting anomaly known as the Bugs Bunny variety. The nickname arises from a die clash that left a small, tooth-like mark on Benjamin Franklin's upper lip, giving the famous patriot a comical buck-toothed appearance. Aside from this whimsical die clash, the coin features the classic mid-century design by John R. Sinnock. The obverse presents a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, accompanied by the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1955 date. Struck in Philadelphia, this coin does not bear a mint mark. The reverse of the coin is rich with American symbolism, showcasing the historic Liberty Bell as its centerpiece. Flanking the bell is a small eagle with its wings spread, a design element included to fulfill legal requirements for the denomination. The reverse inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, and the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. Composed of 90 percent silver, this half dollar contains 0.3617 troy ounces of precious metal, combining historical intrigue with classic American artistry.
