1956 Franklin Half Dollar Fine/XF

In 1956, the United States Mint produced a half dollar that departed from the traditional allegorical figures of liberty, opting instead to honor one of the nation's most famous founding citizens. This fifty-cent piece, struck in 90 percent silver with a precious metal weight of 0.3575 troy ounces, showcases a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin on its obverse. Surrounding his portrait are the fundamental American inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the mid-century date of 1956. The reverse side of the coin is rich with national symbols, dominated by a detailed depiction of the cracked Liberty Bell. Because of a legal requirement to include an eagle on half-dollar coinage, a small eagle with its wings spread wide is positioned to the right of the bell. The reverse is completed with the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the name of the issuing nation, and the half-dollar denomination. This particular coin has survived in Fine or better condition, preserving the mid-century artistry of designer John R. Sinnock.
