1956 Franklin Half Dollar Gem Proof (Type-I) 4 Feathers
In 1956, the Philadelphia Mint produced two distinct reverse designs for its proof half dollars. This specific variety, known as the Type I, is distinguished by the tiny eagle perched to the right of the Liberty Bell. On these scarcer Type I coins, the eagle displays four feathers on the left side of its perch, whereas the more common Type II version shows only three. While the Type I reverse was utilized for both standard circulating coins and proof strikes, it represents less than five percent of the total proof mintage for this year, making it a highly sought-after variant for those who appreciate subtle design variations. The obverse of this ninety percent silver coin features a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, designed by John R. Sinnock. The word LIBERTY arches above his portrait, with the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, positioned below. The year 1956 is placed to the right of the bust. Because these coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, they do not bear a mint mark. On the reverse, the iconic Liberty Bell takes center stage, flanked by the Latin phrase E PLURIBUS UNUM on the left and a small eagle with outstretched wings on the right. The denomination, HALF DOLLAR, is inscribed along the bottom curve, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is written across the top. This classic design series concluded in 1963, leaving behind fascinating varieties like this four-feathered proof for modern enthusiasts to study and admire.
