In 1956, the Philadelphia Mint produced two distinct reverse designs for its proof half dollars. This specific variety, known as the Type I, is distinguished by the tiny eagle perched to the right of the Liberty Bell. On these scarcer Type I coins, the eagle displays four feathers on the left side of its perch, whereas the more common Type II version shows only three. While the Type I reverse was utilized for both standard circulating coins and proof strikes, it represents less than five percent of the total proof mintage for this year, making it a highly sought-after variant for those who appreciate subtle design variations. The obverse of this ninety percent silver coin features a right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, designed by John R. Sinnock.
