In 1956, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of proof half dollars that captured the clean, mid-century aesthetic of American coinage. Because these pieces originated in Philadelphia, they do not bear a mint mark, leaving the focus entirely on the design itself. This particular coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal, and has been certified in an exceptional Proof 67 condition. What makes this specific issue fascinating to study is its categorization as a Type II variety. Collectors and scholars distinguish this variety by looking closely at the small eagle perched to the right of the Liberty Bell on the reverse. On the Type II, the eagle features three distinct feathers on its wings and displays significantly sharper, more defined detailing on its neck feathers. The reverse also bears the traditional inscriptions of the United States of America, the denomination of half dollar, and the motto of E Pluribus Unum, all surrounding the central design elements.
