In 1956, the Philadelphia Mint struck 669,384 proof half dollars, a production run that yielded two distinct design varieties. These coins do not carry a mint mark, which is characteristic of Philadelphia coinage from this era. Collectors and numismatists distinguish the Type II variety by examining the reverse design, specifically focusing on the eagle perched next to the Liberty Bell. On the Type II variety, the eagle's wings display three distinct feathers, and the feathers on the bird's neck exhibit much sharper, more defined details than those found on the Type I version.
