1956 Roosevelt Dime Gem Proof

In 1956, the Philadelphia Mint produced a remarkable proof edition of the Roosevelt dime. Struck in 90 percent silver, this ten-cent piece carries a total silver content of 0.0723 troy ounces. Because of their precious metal composition, many of these mid-century coins were actively saved by the public and retrieved from circulation, preserving their fine details for future generations to study. The obverse of the coin displays a profile portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt facing left. Surrounding his likeness are the inscriptions "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the date of 1956. As is traditional for United States coins minted in Philadelphia during this era, there is no mint mark present on the piece. On the reverse, a carefully balanced trio of symbols represents core American ideals. A central torch, signifying liberty, is flanked by an olive branch representing peace on the left, and an oak branch symbolizing strength and independence on the right. Woven around these elements is the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" alongside the denomination "ONE DIME" and the issuing authority "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
