1957 Washington Quarter Gem Proof

In 1957, the Philadelphia Mint produced a remarkable version of the classic Washington quarter, struck specifically for collectors in a brilliant proof finish. This mid-century coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.1788 troy ounces of the precious metal. The proof striking process gives the coin a mirrored, highly detailed appearance that elevates the familiar circulating design into a work of numismatic art. The obverse of the quarter displays the sharp left-facing profile of George Washington, a design created by John Flanagan. Above the portrait, the word LIBERTY is boldly inscribed, while the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST sits to the left of Washington's neck. The year 1957 is anchored at the bottom edge. On the reverse, Flanagan's powerful heraldic eagle is depicted with outspread wings, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch to symbolize both strength and peace. Above the eagle, the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is clearly legible, surrounded by the country designation UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The denomination, QUARTER DOLLAR, is inscribed along the bottom rim, completing a beautifully balanced design.
