The 1958 Franklin half dollar represents a distinctive era in United States coinage, celebrating one of the nation's most famous founding figures instead of a traditional personification of liberty. Struck in 90 percent silver, this fifty cent piece contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Because this issue was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, it features no mint mark, leaving the space above the bell clean. On the obverse, a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin takes center stage, designed by John R. Sinnock. The word LIBERTY is positioned above the bust, while the solemn promise IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed below. The year 1958 is placed to the right of Franklin's likeness. The reverse side presents a detailed rendering of the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the left of the bell, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is visible, while a small eagle with outstretched wings balances the design on the right. The denomination HALF DOLLAR is inscribed along the bottom curve, completing this classic mid-century design.
