In 1958, the United States Mint continued its mid-century tribute to one of its most famous founding figures. This fifty-cent piece, struck in 90 percent silver, offers a distinct departure from traditional allegorical figures of liberty by featuring a real historical portrait. The obverse is dedicated to Benjamin Franklin, shown in a clean, right-facing profile that captures his recognizable features. Surrounding his likeness are the bold words of freedom and faith that define early American ideals, with the date positioned clearly to the right of his image. The reverse of the coin is equally symbolic, dominated by a large depiction of the Liberty Bell. To the left of the bell, the traditional Latin motto is inscribed, while a small eagle with outstretched wings balances the design on the right. The denomination is spelled out along the lower rim, anchoring a design created by sculptor John R. Sinnock.
