1958 Franklin Half Dollar Gem Proof

0.3575 troy oz .900 1958 Gem Proof

In 1958, the Philadelphia Mint produced a striking proof edition of the Franklin half dollar, showcasing the mid-century aesthetic of United States coinage. Struck in 90 percent silver, this half dollar contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was minted in Philadelphia, the coin does not bear a mint mark, keeping the focus entirely on its balanced and classic design elements. The obverse presents a clean, right-facing profile of Benjamin Franklin, one of America's most famous founding figures. Surrounding his portrait are the fundamental inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, alongside the 1958 date. The design was originally conceived by sculptor John R. Sinnock, who brought a sense of dignified simplicity to the coin's front. On the reverse, the historic Liberty Bell takes center stage, complete with its characteristic crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle with spread wings stands out, fulfilling the legal requirement for the denomination. The reverse is completed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, HALF DOLLAR, and the traditional Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, making this proof issue a fascinating study in mid-century American engraving.
